Search Engine Optimization and Web Site Strategy

You should consider your SEO strategy when you first start to think about your Web site layout. Building it right the first time is always the best way to build a successful campaign.

Think of your Web site in the same way search engines do. Search engines are programmed to determine the "theme" of a site based on the content found on the home page and the first few levels of navigation. Search engines place importance on what you make important, so your best content should be as close to the top as possible. Many Webmasters bury their content, hoping to get visitors to click through their site to find it. This misconception will result in two things - search engines won't find your content and visitors will be frustrated by the site.

Keep search engine roadblocks to a minimum by giving the spiders content up-front. Search-engine friendly sites do not have to be pages of ugly text. There are ways to work in and around flash animations, rollover navigation and even frames. Understanding the technology, or finding someone who does, is the key to giving visitors "eye candy" without preventing spiders from indexing the site.
