Social media is defined as the technology and resulting social behavior of users, both from a consumer and from a business-to-business perspective. As we moved into the new world of Web 2.0, we were able to create our own content and the phenomena began with blogs, chat and other similar technologies. Today, social media goes across multiple sites with hundreds of millions of people engaged - with each other and with companies and organizations.

This rapidly changing space is hard to keep up with. Today's latest thing will no doubt be replaced in a very short time. But it's still very important to remember some of basic rules of social media, which will not change.

The user is in charge - it's their space and we have to remember that with every marketing effort that we pursue. It's not about us - it's about them. If you can keep reminding yourself of that, you'll be further ahead.

New terms are used to describe the social space. The Social Graph is described in many ways; I think of it as the connections that each of us have with each other and then on a larger scale with how our groups are connected. Facebook has an application called Friendwheel, that visually shows the social graph in a way that you can understand.

In this section, I will cover some of the best practices of social media, along with some resources, and some advice on how to move your social media strategy forward.

But I will add, here and now, that this will be outdated by the time it is indexed by the search engines. I'll do my best to keep up!
