Do's and Don'ts |
Optimizing a Web site isn't difficult if you keep the principles in mind when you design and build the site. Here's a quick list of Do's and Don't's to keep in mind:
Here's a list of DON'T's:
- Don't build your site in frames - most search engines spiders have problems with frames.
- Don't build your site all in Flash - spiders don't see the content contained in the Flash file. Placing all of your content within one file with one entrance point to the site actually inhibits your site's visibility.
- Don't use heavy graphics - spiders can't read graphics; they need HTML text.
- Don't rely on Javascript rollovers as the only means of navigation; spiders need text links. Image maps can also cause problems.
- Don't try to trick the search engines with spam techniques. The rule of thumb is that the search engines should see the same webpages that your visitors do.
And, now a list of DO's:
- If your site is dynamic, research workarounds to remove the variables from your URL's. Some search engine spiders are programmed to leave sites that have variables utilizing characters such as "?" and "%" in the URL. Some search engines will index some of your pages with variables, but certainly not all of them, and perhaps not enough of them to position your site effectively.
- Make sure you have enough relevant HTML text on your home page; home pages set the tone for the rest of the site. Make sure you have plenty of content throughout your site. Content is more important than anything else.
- Use meta tags - they aren't dead contrary to popular belief.
