Do's and Don'ts

Over the years, search engine optimization techniques have evolved along with the search engines. As popularity of one search engine rises over others, priorities must change as well.

First, a note about what search sites are and how they work. Search engines use software called spiders that crawl through Web sites and send results back to the engine's index. Common search engines are Google, MSN and Yahoo. Search engine spiders have requirements when they come to your site, and you will need to be ready for them.

Search directories such as Yahoo and DMOZ are sites that use human editors to determine your positioning and keywords. Yahoo requires annual payment for business sites. The description of the site assigned by the editor determines how your site is positioned. DMOZ.org is a free site, with volunteer editors. DMOZ provides the directory results to Google and many other search sites, and it's worth the time you may spend to get listed.
